Martha Bárcena advierte: Putin podría ser detenido si asiste a la toma de protesta de Claudia Sheinbaum

Martha Bárcena, the distinguished ambassador, recently discussed the invitation extended by Mexico’s virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend her inauguration on October 1st. Bárcena stated that Putin would not be able to attend due to the risk of being detained and extradited to the United States, as the International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for his arrest.

In an interview with the program “Sergio Sarmiento y Lupita Juárez” on El Heraldo Radio, Martha Bárcena highlighted that Mexico is a signatory to the International Criminal Court’s statutes, which is why Putin’s attendance could pose legal challenges for Mexico. Bárcena emphasized that Mexico traditionally invites heads of state to presidential inaugurations as a diplomatic courtesy, but it is unusual for such an invitation to be publicly announced by both the Mexican and Russian embassies.

Bárcena noted that the decision to publicize the invitation seemed to be an attempt to create unnecessary controversy, especially considering that Russian heads of state have typically sent representatives to Mexican presidential inaugurations instead of attending in person. She also dismissed any potential reaction from the United States regarding the invitation to Putin, pointing out that Vice President Mike Pence and Ivanka Trump attended President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s inauguration, but the current Vice President, who is running for president, may not be able to attend due to the ongoing election campaign.

Furthermore, Bárcena highlighted Mexico’s agreement with the International Criminal Court, which was signed during Ernesto Zedillo’s administration in 2000. The Court is responsible for prosecuting individuals accused of crimes against humanity, genocide, and war crimes. This agreement underscores Mexico’s commitment to international justice and accountability for grave human rights violations.

In conclusion, Martha Bárcena’s insights shed light on the complex diplomatic considerations surrounding Claudia Sheinbaum’s inauguration and the potential implications of inviting Vladimir Putin in light of international legal obligations. Mexico’s adherence to the rule of law and its engagement with international institutions like the International Criminal Court demonstrate a commitment to upholding justice and human rights on the global stage.
