Las tres grandes prioridades de Sheinbaum en Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural según Julio Berdegué
Julio Berdegué, the upcoming Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, has outlined the three main priorities that the virtual president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, has entrusted to him. In an interview for the program “Noticias de la Tarde con Lupita Juárez,” broadcasted on El Heraldo Televisión, Berdegué detailed that Sheinbaum has asked him to safeguard the well-being of farmers, fishermen, and aquaculturists; ensure access to clean water; and maintain and accelerate production growth in Mexico.
“We have millions of compatriots living in the countryside, producing the food we eat, and living in conditions of poverty and extreme poverty. Changing this reality is our top priority,” stated Julio Berdegué.
The next Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development indicated that the second task at hand is guaranteeing water consumption in Mexico. Due to climate change, Mexico, like many other countries, is facing a critical water situation, with agriculture using almost three-quarters of the country’s water resources.
“We must use water much more efficiently to free up some of this resource for other needs and ensure human consumption. We need to provide water for new investments like nearshoring. There is a vast and ambitious water agenda that involves us,” he commented.
Berdegué also pointed out that the third major priority is production in Mexico, which has been growing throughout the years of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s government.
“Both production for the domestic market and for exports have been increasing, and we are keen on maintaining and accelerating this growth. More production not only ensures national supply at fair prices for consumers but also generates more employment, better salaries, and contributes to the fight against poverty,” explained Julio Berdegué.
In summary, Julio Berdegué is set to take on the role of Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development with a clear focus on improving the well-being of rural communities, ensuring access to clean water, and driving further growth in agricultural production in Mexico under the leadership of Claudia Sheinbaum.
