La visión de Claudia Sheinbaum para la relación México-Estados Unidos en su sexenio

Claudia Sheinbaum, virtual president-elect, has outlined her approach to the country’s diplomatic relations, particularly with the United States, Mexico’s most important trading partner, with whom tensions have arisen over the issue of migrants.

During her campaign, Sheinbaum emphasized that she would not like to have a relationship of subordination with the American nation, but one of equals, and above all, one that prioritizes coordination and cooperation for development. It is worth noting that the new president of the United States will also be defined on November 5.

“There will always be goodwill for coordination, but it is also our responsibility to demand respect for our sovereignty, for Mexicans on both sides of the border. Coordination yes, subordination no. We will never bow our heads,” expressed Claudia Sheinbaum.

What are the topics to be addressed?

Sheinbaum highlighted that migration is one of the main issues between nations, and from her perspective, they will continue to insist with the USA and Canada on the possibility of legal migration, as these two countries can take advantage of the workforce that arrives in their cities.

“That will be and will continue to be our position, which is cooperation for development. There should be support for Mexico, but mainly for Central America and other countries where there is migration to reach the United States,” she added.

Furthermore, she emphasized that the current Government of Mexico, led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), already supports young Central Americans with the “Sowing Life for Youth” programs, so she invites the United States to do the same in order to prevent this sector from having to leave their countries of origin to improve their socio-economic conditions.
