El papel del INE en las elecciones del 2 de junio: Mesa de Análisis Ruta 2024

María Luisa Flores Huerta, head of the Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) in Mexico City, emphasized the importance of all Mexicans going out to vote in the electoral day on Sunday, June 2nd.

During the Ruta 2024 Analysis Panel with Luis Cárdenas on Heraldo Televisión, she spoke about the role of the INE in Mexico City to ensure that citizens go to the polling stations.

Ready for June 2nd

The INE counselor highlighted that they are ready for the electoral day and are currently delivering the necessary packages for the correct development of the voting process in the polling stations.

“As the governing authority, we have the obligation to ensure that the presidencies of the polling station boards have the electoral packages,” she stated.

She also emphasized that they have proper and precise coordination at all times with the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM), as well as a punctual calendar to ensure that everything is ready for June 2nd.

Polling Station Officials

“Now we only hope that on June 2nd, all the citizens who have been selected and trained to be polling officials will effectively accompany us to open the polling stations,” she confessed.

In that regard, she informed that there will be 120,000 polling station officials in the capital city, made up of citizens. Additionally, she recognized the 4,000 trainers and supervisors who have been working throughout the electoral process.

María Luisa Flores detailed that according to electoral law, there must be a minimum of 6 officials per polling station, each with a specific function, but in extreme cases, they have operated with only 3 people. This happens when it is 10:00 am and the officials have not arrived or are absent during the entire electoral day, she explained.

She mentioned that in the case of closing the polling stations, which will open at 8:00 am on June 2nd, they will close at 6:00 pm sharp, and only those who were already in line before that time will be allowed to vote. “Those who arrive afterwards will not be able to pass, even if it is 6:01 pm,” she added.

Preliminary Results

The head of the INE in Mexico City announced that by 8:00 pm on June 2nd, they will be ready to start uploading information on their system about the first results of the candidacies.

To do this, she explained that the new mechanism, which consists of taking a photo of the records and sending them through an application to the INE offices, allows to streamline this counting process.

Quick Count

María Luisa Flores emphasized that the INE cannot announce an official winner in the hours following the election, but it does carry out a quick count that shows “a trend,” which is announced around 9:00 pm, but it may be later depending on the sample size, she clarified.

She explained that the INE will operate the quick count for the presidency, the head of government for Mexico City, and the 8 municipalities that will renew their governorships. Also, this time, there will be a count of positions for deputy and senatorial seats.
